Some people take good advice and some don’t, surely Frank Wheeler hadn’t. He had been outside Sharon Landry’s house all evening watching her. Frank’s infatuation had grown into obsession and he was there that night to brake into Sharon ’s home and do God knows what to her if she rejected him. In his mind Frank would do what ever it took to get Sharon ’s attention to get her back. Frank had taken his time that evening so he wouldn’t be discovered. It wasn’t the first time he had been outside her house but it was the first time he planned to break in it. Frank parked his car down the road like before and walked to her house in the dark. He was wearing dark clothes and came armed with tools to break the locks, a flash light and some rope to tie Sharon up with if it came to that. After peeping through the front window and seeing Sharon and her dog Bridgett peacefully asleep Frank made his move. He went around to the back of the house and began to quietly jimmy the back door open. As he was doing this a cold gust of air swiftly passed over him. Distracted for a moment Frank dropped his screwdriver and bent down to retrieve it. When Frank stood up he came face to face with a tall, angry looking black man.
Franks Wheelers first instinct was to do violence to the man standing in his way. For a moment he hesitated because the man in front of him caught him by total surprise. The mature black man was wearing the same plain dark suit and white shirt he had on when he met Sharon Landry months earlier. The only thing different about his appearance was the tribal marking across his face they were more pronounced than before. “You ain’t coming inside this house!” Cyrus exclaimed as he stood his ground blocking the door Frank had just pried open. Then as quick as he had appeared Cyrus disappeared right before Frank Wheeler’s eyes!
Next out of thin air to Frank’s right walked in Ruby Keller! Pretty Ruby still in her maids’ uniform with matching lace cap looked angrier than Cyrus. “We won’t let you hurt our Sharon !” Ruby said in a low guttural voice. As Ruby came closer to him, Frank Wheeler backed up. Just when Frank thought Ruby was about to grab him she disappeared right before his eyes. Frank saw his chance to get away before the ghosts returned and began to run towards the driveway. He didn’t get far when Charlotte instantly appeared just twenty feet before him. She stopped Frank dead in his tracks just in front of the house on the gravel loop of the driveway. She looked like the same small slip of an old woman as she did the night she stopped Sharon in the alley in Ouchalowcola. Charlotte was still wearing her Sears and Roebuck catalogue dress and faded apron. “You can’t have our Sharon !” Charlotte insisted shaking her finger coming closer to Frank with every stride she took.
By this time Franks’ terror was reaching its all time high. He was afraid of Cyrus he was unnerved by Ruby and terrified of little Charlotte because she seemed the most dangerous, she had a grand-mothers rage! When Frank turned the other way to run in the other direction form Charlotte Frank stumbled backwards and fell to the ground. He looked back and saw that this ghost was still there standing on the lawn looking at him. Frank lost his bowel and bladder control. Then he got up and ran to his sports car faster then an Olympic athlete! Charlotte stood on the lawn satisfied as she watched Frank Wheeler run away from the house. After he was out of sight Charlotte walked on to the front porch and threw the locked front door then disappeared all together

In truth Tommy Hornbeck hated the house on Covington Lane with a passion! Ever since his grandfather started Hornbeck Realty seventy-five years ago, the last on Covington Lane had been on-and-off the market with Hornbeck Realty. Many a time a new owner abruptly packed up and left the house cursing Hornbeck Realty for selling it to them.
There were ghost stories surrounding the old house, and as a child they had given Tommy nightmares. When the last owners, a young wealthy couple from Georgia went to sell the property, Tommy had insisted that they hire an interior decorator to replace all the curtains and wallpaper. Tommy also told the couple to drop the price dramatically, threatening that if they didn’t, they would be stuck with it. Desperate to sell and leave Middleburg behind them, the young couple from Georgia did what they were told. Tommy didn’t care if the couple lost money or not on the house. Tommy demanded the improvements and price reduction because if the house was cheap and turnkey, it would sell fast and be out of this hair.
Over the years, when Tommy had showed the last house on Covington Lane to a client he felt like a kid watching a scary movie that he couldn’t turn off. He had to pull over on the side of the road after leaving the farm to throw up.
